IROJE (履露齋)

Literally meaning “a house that treads upon the dew,” IROJE (履露齋) derives its name from the Book of Rites (禮記), one of the Five Classics of Confucianism.

The phrase originates from a passage in the chapter Jiyi (祭義), which describes how a virtuous person, upon stepping on dew or frost, feels a deep sense of sorrow—not because of the cold, but from a profound remembrance and reverence. Likewise, when the ground is moistened by spring rain and dew, stepping upon it evokes a quiet sense of awe, as if encountering something deeply significant.

In this sense, IROJE signifies the dwelling of a humble scholar whose life is grounded in sincerity and deep filial devotion toward his parents.

이로재 履露齋

직역하면 이슬을 밟는 집이라는 뜻의 履露齋는 유교 경전 오경(五經)의 하나인 예기(禮記)에서 비롯되는 이름입니다. 예기의 24편인 제의에 기술되어 있는 문장, “이슬이나 서리가 내릴 때, 군자가 그것을 밟으면 반드시 슬픈 마음이 생기는데 그것은 추워서 그런 것이 아니다. 봄에 비와 이슬이 내려 땅이 축축해지면 군자가 이를 밟고 반드시 섬뜩하게 느끼는 것도 같은 것이다. (霜露既降，君子履之，必有凄怆之心，非其寒之谓也。春，雨露既濡，君子履之，必有怵惕之心，如将见之)”에 기인합니다. 즉 이로재는 부모에 대한 효심이 큰 가난한 선비가 사는 집이라는 뜻입니다.
