IROJE

The origin of IROJE comes from an old Chinese Literature. The meaning of IROJE, translating directly, is ‘a house of stepping on dewdrops’. The story from the Chinese Literature goes like this; there was a poor living scholar who served his old father. Every early morning he used to go to the quarter where his father lived, wearing an overcoat, and wait for his father to wake up. When his father came out, the scholar handed over his warmed overcoat to his father. The way to his father’s quarter was covered with dewdrops in the morning, thus the true meaning of IROJE could be understood as a house for a scholar with voluntary poverty.

Architects and planners of IROJE have gone through diverse projects by questioning ‘how to define the design identity of our generation’. We are strongly convinced that our philosophy in architecture will enable us to understand the true nature of environments and enhance our everyday life to a better state. Furthermore, we believe our community to become a society of wisdom, which also becomes the virtue of IROJE in this era.

직역하면 ‘이슬을 밟는 집’이라는 뜻의 ‘이로재’는 사서삼경의 하나인 주역에 그 어원을 가집니다. 옛날에 연로하신 부친을 모시고 사는 가난한 선비가 있었는데, 아침 일찍 일어나 외투를 걸치고 부친의 처소에 가서 문전에서 부친이 기침하기를 기다려, 밖으로 나오시는 부친께 따뜻해진 외투를 건네 드렸다고 합니다. 부친의 처소까지 가는 걸음이 아침 이슬을 머금은 길을 밟고 가는 길이었으니, 이를 번안하면 ‘履露齋’는 가난한 선비가 사는 집이라는 뜻이 됩니다.

지난 30년간 우리는 항상 ‘이시대, 우리의 건축’이란 무엇인가?’라는 화두로 수많은 프로젝트를 치열하게 진행해 왔습니다. 그리고 우리는 근본적인 이러한 끊임없는 물음이 사물의 본질을 꿰뚫어 삶을 선하고 진실되게 할 것이며, 또한 우리의 삶을 가치있고 아름답게 만들어 우리의 공동체가 지혜로운 사회로 변화될 것임을 확신합니다. 이것이 이로재가 추구하는 2000년대의 가치입니다.
