Jemunheon

광주비엔날레지원센터는 광주비엔날레(이하 GB)의 영역과 인근 용봉제의 경계에 위치한다. 문화적 풍경을 연상하게 하는 GB의 주변은 사실 그렇지 못하다. 고층의 아파트단지와 난삽한 상가는 급조된 도시의 변두리를 연상케 하는 설익은 풍경이다. 따라서 이 건축을 통하여 GB의 문화풍경이 만들어지는 게 첫 번째 과제였다. 또한 GB의 목적은 매년 개최되는 국제적 문화행사이며 여기를 방문하는 이들과 참여하는 작가들이 만나고 헤어지는 광장마당은 대단히 중요한 공간이며 수 많은 기억을 담는 장소이다. 어쩌면 GB의 상징적 장소이기도 한 이 공간의 명확한 성격 구현을 위해서도, 이 건축은 배경으로 지어져야 했다. 그래서 길다란 장벽이 놓이게 된다. GB와 용봉제는 어떻게 보면 문화와 야생이며 도시와 자연의 관계이다. 이 벽은 두 영역을 구분하여 그 기능을 뚜렷하게 하지만 동시에 또한 두 영역을 연결시킨다. 1층의 개구부를 통해 연결되어 나타난 풍경은 마치 액자 속의 그림이며 이로 인해 두 영역은 인상적으로 해후한다. 이 벽은 서쪽을 향해 있다. 내부로 들어오는 서향일사를 막기도 하지만, 늦은 오후 받는 일사로 인해 이 갈색의 콘크리트 벽은 더욱 갈색으로 변하며 빛난다. 마치 흙담에 일렁이는 햇살의 풍경, 이는 비엔날레마당에서 전개되는 모든 사물과 행사에 대한 기억을 담는 벽이 된다. 이 벽의 속은 마치 작은 도시와 같은 구성을 가지고 있다. 작은 마당이 있고 작은 공원이 있으며 골목길이 있어 거주하는 이들이 수시로 만나고 헤어지며 이 작은 공동체의 구성원임을 확인하게 된다. GB를 향하여는 절제된 풍경을 가지지만 용봉제를 향하여는 무한히 열려있다. 그 속에 틀어진 각도의 매쓰가 두 영역의 사이를 비집고 나타나, 외부로는 두 영역의 존재를 긴장 속에 나타내며 내부로는 드라마틱한 공간을 형성한다. 결국은 이 모두가 갈색의 벽이 만든 풍경이다. 이 벽은 문화의 벽이며 그것을 위해 애쓴 모든 이의 기억을 담는 벽이다. 따라서 이 건축을 아마도 이런 이름으로 불러도 좋을 게다.

Yongbongje. The areas around GB which should make us associate traditional scenery actually couldn’t do it. High-rise apartment buildings and messy commercial malls are common scenery to make us associate hurried constructed urban outskirts. Therefore, it was our first mission to create GB own cultural scenery by this construction. Also, Gwangjang Yard where visitors and authors meet and part in annually held traditional culture events is very important space. It remains a lot of memories. To achieve clear feature of this space which is also GB’s symbolic place, this construction shall be built as background. So, long walls are stretched. GB and Yongbongje are culture and wild. They are the relation between city and nature. This wall divides two areas to distinguish their functions but at the same time, link their areas. Scenery seen through open space on the first floor is like picture in a frame. It made both areas meet impressively. This wall faces West. It blocks sunlight from West coming inside. The brown color of this concrete wall becomes strong brown and shines under sunlight in the late afternoon. Like sunlight scenery wavering on mud walls, this wall keeps all memories of events and stuffs developed in Biennale yard. The inside of this wall has small city structure. Small yard, alley, and small parks are in where residents might meet and part frequently to find themselves as members of this small community. Controlled scenery is stretched toward GB but limitless scenery stretches toward Yongbongje. Angle between them appears, making two areas stay in tension and inside space dramatic. Finally, all of these are the scenery that brown wall makes. This wall is culture wall. It contains memories of all the people who tried to create it. Therefore, this construction might be called the name.
