Baeksangjae

백상재

이 집은 대한민국 총리를 지낸 분의 거처이다. 최고위직을 거친 분으로서 평화로운 여생을 보내기 위해 새로운 터에 새집을 짓기를 원했다. 그의 정치적 이력으로 미루어 넉넉한 건축비용이 있으리라 여기지 않았지만, 실제로도 부족한 금액이었다. 이로재가 이런 일에 익숙해 있는 지 오래라고 해도, 설계와 공사기간 중 코로나와 우크라이나 전쟁으로 인해 폭증하는 공사비를 극복하는 일은 큰 난제였다.

땅은 요즘 전원주택지로 각광을 받는 경기도 전수리에 오래전에 조성된 택지. 서울에서 산 넘고 물 건너 한 시간을 달려야 하는 곳이지만 주변에는 이미 많은 집들이 들어서 있었고 그 대부분은 크지 않은 규모들이어서 주변 정황은 대단히 평화로웠다. 시멘트 벽돌로 흙을 가두어 올려진 택지는 주변보다 높아 좋은 전망을 확보하고 있었지만 이는 멀리서도 이 집은 보일 수 있다는 것을 뜻해서 주된 좌향을 결정하게 했다. 다행스럽게 필지에 붙어 있는 남쪽 땅이 다소 높은 언덕이며 나무도 제법 갖추어 있어 이 집이 주된 근접 조망으로 의지할 수 있었다.

집은 이 언덕과 거리를 유지하도록 ㄱ자로 자리 잡는 게 일조에도 좋고 소위 풍수적 관점에서도 공간의 균형을 유지하는 일이었다. 다만, 도로면에서 4미터를 올라 조성된 땅이어서 담장만으로는 그 안정성의 확보가 어려워 도로면 담장 곁에 정자 같은 작은 시설과 적절한 크기의 나무를 심기로 했지만, 비용 때문에 나무만 심고 말았다. 거실에서 이어진 작은 사랑방은 외부와 이어지는 누대 구실을 하도록 했다. 바깥과 소통하는 공간이었다. 그러나 연로하신 부모님이 가끔 거처하실 경우를 고려하여 바닥 레벨이 거실과 같아야 한다는 요구를 망설임 끝에 받아들인 까닭에 그 성격이 다소 약화되었다. 그러나 그 작은 방에서 사유하며 가끔 툇마루에 앉아 건너편 마을의 저녁이 익어가는 풍경을 보는 일은 이 집 고유의 권한이 된다.

길에 면한 높은 옹벽도 집과 같이 백색으로 칠하여 건축규모가 작음에도 전체규모는 만만하게 보이지 않는다. 이집에서 여생을 보내고자 하는 건축주와 맞는 이미지일지도 모른다고 여겼다. 독락(獨樂)의 글이 생각났다. 古之賢士 何獨不然, 樂其道而 忘人之勢. 이 맹자의 글을 굳이 해석하자면, 예로부터 ‘선비는 어찌 홀로 있지 않으랴, 그 길을 즐김으로써 세상의 세력을 잊는다’라는 뜻이다. 그래서, 집 이름을 백상재(白相齋)라고 짓고 현판까지 만들어 집에 붙였다. ‘백상’은 중국어에 어슬렁거리며 거닌다는 뜻이라, 그래서 그렇게 살기를 원하는 이의 집이지만, 덧붙이자면 깨끗이 재상을 지낸 이의 집이라고 할 수도 있을 것이다.

Baeksangjae

This house is the residence of a former Prime Minister of South Korea. As someone who had held the highest position, he wanted to build a new house on a new site to enjoy a peaceful life. Despite the assumption that the cost of construction would be ample due to his political history, the actual amount was insufficient. Although it was familiar to us with such situations, overcoming the soaring construction costs due to the Covid and the Ukraine War during the design and construction period was a big challenge.

The land is a plot that was developed a long time ago in Jeonsuri, Gyeonggi Province, which is now receiving attention as a rural residential area. It is a place that requires a one-hour drive over a mountain and across a river from Seoul, but many houses had already been built in the area, and most of them were not very large, so the surrounding environment was very peaceful. The plot of land, which was built up with cement bricks to enclose the earth, was higher than the surroundings, securing a good view, but this also meant that the house could be seen from far away, determining the main orientation of the house. Fortunately, the southern land adjacent to the site was a somewhat high hill with a decent amount of trees, so the house could rely on this as its main view.

The house had to be situated in an L shape to maintain a distance from the hill and achieve a good exposure to sunlight, and it was also necessary to maintain balance in the space from the perspective of feng shui. However, since the land was raised 4 meters from the roadside, it was difficult to secure its stability with just a fence, so a small facility like a gazebo and appropriately sized trees were planted next to the fence along the roadside, but only the trees were planted due to const concerns. The small room connected to the living room was intended to serve as a veranda that communicated with the outside. However, because the elderly parents occasionally stayed there, it was necessary to accept their demand that the floor level be the same as that of the living room, which somewhat weakened the nature of the space. Nevertheless, sitting on the veranda and occasionally watching the evening landscape of the village from there became a unique privilege of this house.

The high white wall facing the street was also painted the same color as the house, so even though the scale of the building was small, the overall scale did not seem insignificant. It was thought that this image would match the homeowner’s desire to spend the rest of his life in this house. The phrase of “Dokrak(獨樂)” came to mind. 古之賢士 何獨不然, 樂其道而 忘人之勢. Mencius’ words meaning, “Why wouldn’t wise men (Korean scholars in the olden days) enjoy their own way and forget the power of the world?” Therefore, the house was named Baeksangjae(白相齋) and a sign was made and attached to the house. ‘Baeksang’ means to live frugally wandering in Chinese, so it may be the house of someone who wants to live like that, but it can also be said to be the house of someone who has lived a clean and prosperous life.
