파주헌책방-미로의 서가도시

‘아름다운 재단’, ‘아름다운 가게’, ‘파주 헌책방’….이런 이름들이 뜻하는 선한 일들에 참여한다는 것은 그것으로 보상 받는 일일 게다. 그런 일들이 내게는 드물지 않은 게 다소 문제긴 하지만… 파주아시아출판문화정보센터는 파주출판도시의 건축물 중 가장 공공성이 높고 그만큼 중심적 위치를 차지한다. 그러나 파주출판도시의 건축지침에 의하면 도시전체에서 중심적 지배적 장소를 배제하고 있으며, 공모를 통해 지어진 이 건축 역시 특별한 형상을 가지지 않으려 애쓴 결과이다. 그래서 무표정하고 다소 투박하며 다른 건물에 비해 스케일이 커서 더욱 큰 무게를 느끼게 하는 이 건축에는 무언가 부드럽고 아기자기하며 해학적인 것이 필요하다고 여겼다. 더욱이 헌 책방의 위치가 이층 데크을 거쳐야 도달하는 곳이고 보면 땅 위에서 잘 보이지도 않아 사람의 호기심을 자극하여 유인하는 장치가 마련되어야 했다. 불규칙한 선들이 빈 공간 사이에 떠 있게 하여, 구름 같기도 하고 모빌 같기도 하며 때로는 하늘에 쓴 낙서 같기도 한 빈 지붕이 빈 공간 속에 떠 있고, 그 아래에 무인 서가를 나란히 놓았다. 때때로 이 지붕에는 형형색색의 배너가 걸려 축제의 장소처럼 공간을 바꾸기도 한다. 코르텐으로 마감된 바닥 위의 서가는 서로 다른 높이를 가지고 있어 멀리서 보면 마치 도시 길거리의 풍경처럼 보이기도 한다. 역시 파주출판도시 속에 있기 때문이다. 이 도시풍경은 실내 책방으로까지 연결되어 실내의 서가-역시 높낮이가 다르게 된-와 접속된다. 헌책을 찾는 즐거움과 함께, 이미 즐거운 놀이터가 되어버린 이 파주헌책방을 찾는 이들의 표정을 보면 한결같이 즐겁다. 그래서 신이 더욱 난다. 미로의 서가도시를 만든 셈인가.

Beautiful Store Secondhand Bookshop – A Maze of Bookshelf City, Paju, 2004

Although I am recently engaged in a large number of voluntary design services, participation in a work sponsored by the Beautiful Foundation, an NGO for promoting a culture of giving and sharing, is a joy in itself. Publication, Culture and Information Center, whose design was selected through open competition, is the most public facility among the buildings of Paju Book City. The city’s Design Guideline refrains from a hierarchical urban structure, and hence this grand building, although it serves a central urban function, is intentionally anonymous in its choice of site and form. This resulted in a huge, expressionless, and somewhat crude structure, and a touch of charm and humor was required. In addition, since the location for the secondhand bookstore was at the deck of the second floor—not easily visible from the ground level—a sight-catching device to attract people’s attention was required. The empty space of the open bookshelf space is filled with a roof of irregular lines, which resemble clouds, mobiles, or at times a graffiti written on the canvas of the sky. Banners of various sizes and colors will hang from this structure from time to time, shifting the atmosphere into that of a cheerful festival. The Cor-ten covered bookshelves with various heights, when seen from a distance, will resemble an urban skyline against the actual cityscape of Paju Book City. This urban scenery is extended into the interior bookstore by more bookshelves with changing heights. Visitors seem to find delight not only in finding old precious books but also in strolling about in this bookstore which has already become a joyful playground. Our joy is all the more enhanced by the happy expression on people’s faces. Perhaps we have built a maze of bookshelf city.
