Boao Canal Village

보아오는 중국 하이난 섬 서편 바닷가에 위치한 작은 마을이다. 보아오 포럼을 창설하며 몰려드는 방문객을 위한 숙박시설이 필요하자 디벨로퍼인 소호차이나가 400세대 빌라를 세우게 된다. 그들은 2002년 7월, 1개월의 기간을 주고 마스터플랜에 대한 제안을 할 것을 요청하였는데, 놀라운 것은 그 다음해 4월의 아시아정상회담 회의를 위한 주거시설로 우선 쓰일 것이라고 했으니 아무리 따져봐도 그들의 계획은 무모해 보였다. 현지의 땅은 너무도 아름다웠다. 처녀림이었다. 우거진 야자수림과 야생의 열대식물들은 그것으로 충분히 엑조틱하였고 눈부시도록 맑은 물과 흰 모래는, 도시의 분진에 뒤덮인 이방인을 속까지 깨끗이 씻어내렸다. 더구나 저녁 하늘을 갖가지 색으로 물들이는 석양의 아름다움은 너무도 황홀하였다. 습기가 몹시 높은 게 다소 답답했다. 바람이 무척 요긴하였다. 바람이 주제여야 했으며 강한 그늘이 또한 필요했다. 그것은 바다와 나무숲을 연결하는 통로이기도 했으며 또한 내가 주장해야 할 비움의 실체이기도 했다. 그래서 모든 집을 1미터 들어올렸다. 만조시에 물이 차는 것을 고려하기도 했지만 원지형을 가급적 보존하고자 했으며, 바람은 집 밑으로도 불고 바람의 통로가 된 집을 통해서도 넘나들게 되었다. 두 가지 기본적 유형을 만들었다. 물에 면한 집과 숲에 면한 집. 하나의 집에는 가운데 중정을 두어 집 사이로도 바람이 불게 했다. 그래서 리드미칼한 배치가 물 따라, 숲 따라 이루어졌다. 계획은 다소 수정되어 1차분 100채만 먼저 지었다. 그래도 워낙 어려운 공기였지만 결국 4월에 방문객을 수용하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 마술이었다.

Boao is a small town located in the western seashore of Hainan Island in China. SOHO China, a developer of China, decided to build 400 villas to meet a need to accommodate the coming visitors to attend the newly created Boao Forum. In July 2002, SOHO China invited some selected architects to devise a masterplan in one month. To my surprise, they said the village would be used as the main accommodations for the participants of the Forum to be held in April 2003. Their timetable seemed so far-fetched from all points of view. The site was extremely beautiful. It was a virgin forest. Luxuriating palm trees and wild tropical plants were entirely exotic by themselves. Crystal clear water and white sand wiped out a stranger’s mind that is covered with dust and dirt of the city. The beauty of the sunset that paints the evening sky with diverse colors must enrapture everybody. It was fascinating, spectacular. There was, however, very stuffy humid. Wind was mostly needed here and it should be a theme of the architect. A pleasant shade was also necessary. The shade would act as a passage to woods from the sea, and at the same time, demonstrate the substance of void. So the floor level of every house should be lifted one meter above the surroundings. While considering water level at high tide, it is required to preserve the original topography as much as possible. As the result, the wind was expected to blow through the house and under the house as well. Two basic types for the villas were suggested: a house facing the water and the other facing the forest. A courtyard was placed in the middle of the house, causing wind to blow through. A rhythmic arrangement was made along the water, and along the forest. The construction plan was slightly revised, and 100 houses were built first. It was still a very difficult construction work, but in the end the visitors could stay in the villas, as planned, in April. It was magic.
