Changdeokgung Palace Info Center

창덕궁 관람지원센터는, 이 세계문화유산의 관람을 위한 안내 기능과 함께 입장권을 배부하는 창구 즉 티켓부스를 설계하는 일이 거의 전부인 간단한 프로젝트이지만, 위대한 역사의 유적을 접하는 시작점의 건축이라는 사실이 간과될 수 없는 중요성을 가진다. 그러나 이보다 더 큰 과제가 설계팀에게 있었으니 율곡로와 건축물 사이 공간의 처리였다. 이 공간은 오랫동안 민영환의 동상이 설치되어 있었으나 그의 전력시비로 철거된 다음 작은 광장이 되었지만 그 성격이 불분명했다. 더구나 앞을 가로지르는 율곡로 높이보다 낮은 위치에 있는 월대와 맞물려 창덕궁 앞의 공간들이 늘 어설프게 보였던 것이다. 그러다 마침, 율곡로를 새로 고치면서 다행스럽게도 도로레벨이 월대보다 낮게 만들어지기로 결정되고 다소 넓어지게 되어, 관람지원센터의 설계 또한 방향을 잡을 수 있었다.

창덕궁 앞 월대의 공간은 정문의 일부이며 의식을 위한 시설이어서 대단히 공식적이다. 이는 여기서 그냥 서성대기가 어렵다는 것을 뜻한다. 또한 구경거리로 거행되는 수문장교대 행사를 보기 위해서는 일반인들의 관람시설이 필요한데 이 작은 광장이 그 역할을 수행하기가 적합하였다. 또한 이 공간은 창덕궁을 찾는 이들이 만나는 장소이기도 하지만 시민들이 그냥 앉아서 쉴 수 있는 작은 공원으로도 기능할 수 있었다. 따라서 이 모든 행위를 담을 수 있는 장치가 필요하여, 크지 않은 면적이지만, 그 행위들을 유추하며 나누고 계단과 경사로와 마당과 무대 같은 공간들을 그렸다. 그래서 비어있어도 발생할 수 있는 행위를 상상하게 하였으니 불확정적 비움이라고 할 수 있다.

건축물은 이런 광장의 행위와 역사유적을 매개하는 장치여야 했으며, 그래서 그 풍경과 행위들과 유연히 접속되도록 불규칙한 기둥으로 이루어진 아케이드 즉 매개공간을 전면에 두었다. 형태는 현대의 건축이 되어 오랜 역사를 가진 옛 건축의 진정성을 훼손하지 않도록 했으며, 부속적 기능을 수행하는 건축이지만, 오랫동안 모호했던 창덕궁 앞 외부공간 모두가 이 건축을 통해 정비된 결과여서 건축의 완결성 외에도 큰 의미를 갖는다.

The Changdeokgukng Palace Info Center is a simple project primarily focused on designing ticket booths that distribute entry tickets for the viewing of this world cultural heritage site, along with providing guidance. However, it holds undeniable importance as the architectural starting point for encountering the great historical relics. Nevertheless, the design team faced an even greater challenge in handling the space between Yulgok-ro(Yulgok road) and the buildings. This space used to have a statue of Min Yeong-hwan for a long time, but it was removed due to controversies surrounding his collaboration with the Japanese. Afterwards, it became a small square with an unclear character. Furthermore, the spaces in front of Changdeokgung Palace, which were lower in elevation than Yulgok-ro that crossed in front, always appeared awkwardly connected to the stone wall. Fortunately, with the decision to redesign Yulgok-ro, the road level was lowered below the stone wall, making it slightly wider. This allowed for a clear direction in the design of the Info Center.

The space in front of the stone wall at Changdeokgung Palace is part of the main gate and is highly formal as it serves ceremonial purposes. It implies that one cannot simply loiter here. Moreover, in order to witness the changing of the guard ceremony, which is a spectacle, there was a need for viewing facilities for the general public, and this small square was suitable for that role. Additionally, this space served as a meeting place for those visiting Changdeokgung Palace, but it could also function as a small park where citizens could simply sit and rest. Therefore, a device was needed to accommodate all these activities, and although the area was not large, it was designed to deduce and divide these activities, incorporating elements such as stairs, ramps, courtyards and a stage-like space. Thus, even when empty, it could be imagined generating activities, and it can be described as a state of indeterminate void.

The architecture had to serve as a device mediating the activities and historical relics of this square, and for that reason, an irregular arcade, or an intermediary space composed of irregular columns, was placed in the forefront to seamlessly connect with the landscape and activities. The form became a modern architecture that did not undermine the authenticity of the ancient architecture with its long history. While it function as an accessory structure, it also holds great significance as the external space in front of Changdeokgung Palace, which was ambiguous for a long time, was revitalized through this architecture, providing not only architectural completeness but also profound meaning.
