The Commune by the Great Wall, a boutique hotel, is located in Shuiguan, 60km north of Beijing, bordered by the Great Wall. It has a very beautiful scenery of three valleys. The client SOHO China, a successful developer of China, originally planned to 50 lavish villas for the rich Chinese people. For this project, they invited 12 renowned Asian architects to design 11 model houses and a clubhouse. This project, however, was changed as to build a boutique hotel instead of villas after the project was given a special prize at the 2002 Venice Biennale of Architecture.

The size of the clubhouse, more than 3000m2 in total floor area was somewhat larger, considering the mild terrain of the surrounding mountains. In order to avoid damaging the beautiful scenery, it was decided at the first field visit to divide the entire volume into smaller units and let the mountainous terrain flow down through them. In addition, there was a trace of time-honored cultivating paddy fields on the site, and it was necessary to make arrangements for architecture to make such a trace remain remembered.

Finally, five long boxes protrude from the mountains in the north. Between the boxes, nature flows to the mountains in the south. The clubhouse is finished with Corten steel that changes as time goes by as well as the surrounding scenery.

White poplar trees had already existed in the construction site. None of a single tree was cut as promised. Thus, some trees looked like they penetrated the wooden decks while some others piercing the building. As a place where lots of trees had grown became a courtyard. There seems be no division between outdoor and indoor, because a building was not designed but a landscape, meeting the requirements of the land.
