Dormitory of CHA University

차의과대학의 캠퍼스는 외딴 산 중에 있다. 기존에 있던 입시학원을 인수하여 대학캠퍼스로 사용해왔다. 기존 건물들이 붉은 벽돌로 마감되어 있어 새로 짓는 건물들도 붉은 벽돌로 주재료를 삼았다. 이용할 시설이 주변에 별 없는 이 캠퍼스에 거주하는 젊은 학생들에게 기숙사는 어쩌면 속세와 절연한 절이나 수도원 같은 것이다. 물론 보다 개방적이고 자유스러운 장치를 설치하여 불편한 환경을 개선할 수도 있겠지만 그 한계와 어설픈 위로가 나을 것 같지 않았다. 오히려 수도원 같은 공간구조를 본격적으로 가지는 게 더욱 합목적적일 수 있다. 평생을 여기서 보내지 않을 것이다. 그래서 주어진 환경이 특별한 조건이 되어도 무방하였다. 더구나 기숙사의 땅은 캠퍼스 내에서도 도서관 뒤편의 북쪽 끝에 위치하는데 경사가 비교적 많은 곳이다. 몇 개 건물로 나눠질 수 밖에 없으며, 건물 사이에 생기는 마당은 넓지 않은 공간이니 어쩔 수 없이 높은 벽에 둘러싸이게 된다. 이 위요되는 공간에는 긴장감이 있게 마련이다. 그래서 이 긴장감은 여기서 중요한 건축요소가 되며 어쩌면 이로 인하여 내부의 공동체적 연대를 강하게 할 수도 있을 것이다. 어차피 기숙사에 기거하는 이들은 스스로를 바깥 세상에서 추방한 이들 아닌가? 면밀한 디테일과 세심한 재료 사용은 치밀한 내부공간의 구조와 함께 이 건축에서의 거주풍경을 특별하게 만든다. 복선으로 삼은 게 수도원적 공간이니 영성도 깃들어 있을 게다.

The campus of CHA University is located on an isolated mountain. It took over an existing college entrance preparatory school and used the site as the university campus. The existing buildings are finished with red bricks, so the main material for the new buildings was also red brick. For the students living in this campus having limited facilities nearby, the dormitory may be like a Buddhist temple or monastery disconnected from the world. Of course, you may install more open and free devices to improve the inconvenient environment, but the limits and poor consolation didn’t seem to be any better. Perhaps making a spatial structure like a monastery could be more corresponding to the purpose. They will not spend their entire lives here, so it was okay for the given environment not to have special conditions. Moreover, the land for dormitory is located at the north end at the back of the library, where there is a relatively steeper slope. It had to be divided into a few buildings, and the yard between the buildings is not a large space, so it had to be surrounded by high walls. This surrounding space had to have some tension. So this tension becomes an important building element, and maybe they could create strong unity in the community inside. Anyway, aren’t those who live in the dormitory the ones who deported themselves from the outer world? Meticulous details and the thorough use of the material, along with the elaborate structure of the inner space, make the residential landscape in this building special. The monastery-like space is foreshadowed, so there will also be a spiritual indwell.
