금곡은 쇠골이라는 뜻이지만 쇠붙이와 관련된 역사가 없는 것으로 보아 사이 골짜기로 불리던 곳이 변해서 지명으로 남게 된 것이라고 한다. 대지는 번잡한 도시를 벗어나 얕은 산세가 이어지는 한적한 위치에 있었다. 아파트에서만 줄곧 거주해온 건축주는 오래전부터 전원의 환경 속에 단독주택에서의 삶을 그렸는데, 코로나 팬데믹은 이 꿈을 바로 실현하게 하였다.

2백평이 채 안되는 땅은 동북편에 비탈진 산의 숲이 펼쳐지는 배경을 가지고 앞뒤의 다른 주택 사이에 위치했다. 아파트의 실내공간에서만 보냈던 삶과 달라야 하는 만큼 옥외의 마당을 중심공간으로 삼기 위해 집과 일체화된 울타리로 마당을 두르고 땅 전체가 건축공간 속에 있게 했다. 집은 아파트와는 달리 다소 불편하게 느껴질 정도로 주어진 작은 건폐율을 최대로 이용하며 동선을 길게 했다. 방과 방 사이, 거실과 식당 주방 사이에도 마당을 두어 이동할 때면 반드시 바깥의 풍경을 끌여들여 보게 했다. 자녀방이 있는 윗층도 마찬가지여서 더러는 아무 기능이 없는 벽면의 공간을 지나기도 한다. 그러나 그게 사유도 촉발하는 건강한 삶의 풍경일 것이었다.

그리고 모든 벽면과 프레임들을 흰색으로 감싸고 그 프레임 속의 삶과 녹색의 숲이 이루는 풍경이 아름답게 빛나도록 하여 건축이 삶의 배경이 되게 했다. 금곡동주택. 달리 특별한 이름을 갖지 않아도, 골짜기 사이 하얀 틀의 집이라는 뜻과 너무도 어울리는 풍경 아닐까.

Geumgok means iron valley, but there seems to be no history of iron fittings, so it is likely that the place name came about because the area was once called the in-between-valley. The site was situated in a serene location, following the shallow hills and away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The homeowner, who had lived exclusively in apartments, had long dreamed of a life in a detached house in a rural setting, and the COVID-19 pandemic provided the opportunity to make this dream a reality.

The land, covering less than 650sqm, was nestled between other houses with a backdrop of the forested hills to the northeast. Given the desire for a life different from the one lived within the confines of an apartment’s indoor space, the design focused on the outdoor courtyard as the central space. The entire property was encompassed by a frame integrated with the house, placing the entire outdoor space within the architectural space. The house, unlike an apartment, maximized the given small floor area to create an extended flow and allowed views of the outdoors throughout.

Space between rooms, the living area, and the dining and kitchen areas were designed with courtyards so that moving around necessitated glimpses of the external landscape. The upper floor, with the children’s house, had a similar design, sometimes requiring passage through spaces with non-functional walls. Nevertheless, this design would likely contribute to a healthier and more inspiring lifestyle.

Every wall and frame was enveloped in white, allowing the life within the frames and the green forest landscape to beautifully shine. Gold Valley Residence. It may not have a unique name, but could there be a more fitting term than ‘house within white frames in the valley’ for this scenery?
