Gudeok Church

이 교회는 내가 어릴 적 다녔던 고향의 교회이다. 부산을 떠난 지 무려 35년이 되었을 때 나를 굳이 찾아 설계를 맡겼다. 이 교회 바로 옆에 내 아버지가 지은 집에서 어린 시절을 보냈는데 놀랍게도 그때까지 그 집이 있었으며, 교회의 대지로 편입되어 새로운 운명을 맞게 되었다. 뿐만 아니라 그 집 앞의 작은 골목길과 담장, 심지어 거친 몰탈 마감 위의 계란색 페인트까지 그대로 있는 것을 보며 모든 기억들이 되살아 났다. 그 기억들을 새로운 교회 건축에 담고자 했다. 길과 마당, 무화과나무, 골목의 풍경 그리고 내가 살았던 집까지 모든 요소가 설계 속에 그려졌다. 그래서 새로이 만들어진 마당과 계단, 매쓰들의 비틀어진 각도 등 추상화되고 변형되긴 하였지만 모두가 그 기억의 반추이며 형상이다.

Gudeok Church was founded during Korea War at foot of Gudeok mountain in Busan where many refugees migrated. The mountain as boundary of this area made urban development of Busan oriented to opposite direction. This is why surroundings of Gudeok Church has still so many memories of past. Existing church after several rebuilt was enlarged and included many small houses as attached facilities in surroundings. Some of them are more than half century old. But they were to be demolished for new church building. Keeping even a memory of the houses as a ‘modern remains’ is regarded important factor to design. Thus, some old private houses were to be incorporated into the new plan of this church as well as the small alleyways as memory. So most of the elements of the new architectural work ― the yard, the stairs, the masses arranged at non-aligned angles, among others ― are abstracted and transformed, but they are embodied from the rumination of the memories. Above all the most dominant here is the mountains. It is highly regarded any architecture should have respect to it.
