Hyehwa Residential College of Daejeon University

이 프로젝트는 대전대학교의 residential college이며, 기숙사의 개념에서 학과과정의 자격을 부여한 시설이다. 대학이란 직능을 가르치고 배우는 직업학교가 아니라, 단어 자체의 뜻에서 보듯 보편적 가치를 추구하는 곳이다. 이를 이루자면 무엇보다 전인적 교육이 필요한데 이는 단순한 지식의 습득에서 비롯되는 게 아니라 삶 자체로 학습하고 연마해야 이뤄지는 일이라면 이런 거주형 캠퍼스는 대단히 유효한 방법일 수 있다. 그렇게 되면, 한시적이라고 해도, 이 곳에 들어오는 일은 각자 살고 있던 세상의 경계를 넘는 일이며 어쩌면 속된 세상에서 떠나 육체적, 물질적, 정신적 자유를 찾는 수도사적 삶을 살아야 하는 일 아닐까? 그래서 이 설계의 개념을 수도원에서 찾았고 Academic Monastery라고 이름하였다. 수도원은 무엇보다 세상과 경계를 분명히 해야 한다. 그래서 바깥 세상을 향해 닫힌 벽면을 길게 쌓아 멀리했다. 기존의 캠퍼스 방향으로는 열려있지만 이 대학수도원의 내부는 뚝 떨어진 지형으로 인해 그 전모가 드러나지 않는다. 정작 내부는 자유롭다. 숙소로 쓰이는 긴 경계적 건물 사이에 자유롭게 배치된 공유공간들은 그 사이를 지나는 동선들로 늘 다이내믹한 삶의 풍경을 나타낸다. 애초에 이들을 기존의 숲 속에 조심스럽게 배치하여 Academic Monastery in Forest라고 까지 하였지만, 공사 편리를 이유로 기존의 수목들을 죄다 베어내어 숲의 풍경이 사라지고 말았다. 꼭 다시 심는다는 약속 아래 묵인하였으나 아직 제대로 심겨지지 않기도 하고 그나마 새롭게 심어 놓은 나무도 아직 다 자라지 않았다. 그래서 이 건축은 아직 완성되었다고 할 수 없다. 수목이 다 자라고, 이곳에 거주하기 시작한 학생들이 그들의 삶을 덧붙일 때가 내가 그리던 풍경이다.

University is an academic institution pursuing universal values as the word “university” itself clearly denotes its meaning. Whole-person education is needed for this goal, and it would be achieved not by simply acquiring knowledge but by making efforts for self-development and learning from living in the real world. Under this understanding, the residential college was shaped as a very effective means. For students, coming into the residential college, even though they live there for a limited period of time, means that they cross the boundaries of the world they have lived so far. In some sense, it may mean that they renounce the worldly life and live a life of monks or nuns looking for physical, material and spiritual freedom. That’s why ‘academic monastery’ was named for this project. The monastery should have clear boundaries off from the secular world. The long wall is for such a feeling of seclusion from the outer world. Though the monastery is open to the existing campus areas, it is difficult to guess about its inside as it is not properly visible from the terrain outside of the university. The inside, however, is unexpectedly free. The residential buildings have freely-deployed shared places between them. The shared places are always very expressive of life and vigor derived from the flow of pedestrians. In the beginning of this project, ‘Academic monastery in forest’ was name of this project but the existing forest disappeared for the convenience of construction work. Newly planted trees are very young and small, but they will grow up in time. Therefore, this architecture has not been finished yet. It will be realized when the trees are well grown and the students living here become part of the landscape.
