Kyobo Book City Center

이 프로젝트는 파주출판도시의 설계지침을 고스란히 따랐다. 건물유형으로 ‘서가형’의 장소에 놓여 있을 뿐 아니라 이미 주변에는 그 유형에 의거해서 많은 건물들이 들어서 있었다. ‘공동성’이 중요한 도시목표임을 감안하여, 이 건축은 주변의 배치상황을 적극적으로 받아들였다. 즉 10m 도로 건너 작은 필지들이 만든 서가형 배치의 상황을 그대로 이어서 매스 부분에는 매스로 보이드 부분에는 보이드로 대응하여 길다란 건물을 분절하고 조화한다. 포디엄으로 설정되는 1,2층은 유리로 마감하여 윗 부분의 현무암 매스가 가볍게 떠 있도록 하였으며 적절한 뒤틀림으로 전체 리듬을 결정하였다. 결국 여기에서도 비움은 중요한 개념이 된다.

Kyobo Book Center Building was designed completely along the Design Guidelines of Paju Book City, the whole city in which it is located. According to the Guideline, the city was divided into several districts, and each of which had its own urban pattern. The sector where Kyobo Book Center is located in had a pattern of ‘bookshelves unit’, not to make a continuous mass of buildings that might block the view to the adjacent river and mountain. As a result, even though it occupied a long rectangular site, Kyobo Book Center was broken into small pieces, each piece facing the same direction of the confronting building masses from the opposite side of the road. Mass faces mass; void faces void. This arrangement was intended to create a collaborative scene so that every building can show its relationship with the others. The facade of the lower body as podium is finished with light transparent glass so that the upper split body with basalt skin appears to be floating. Adequate twist was given to smaller masses to control the rhythm of the building mass. Once more, creating a void became an inevitable element of the design.
