It was my initial aim that a monument for Ma Hae-song, a pioneering writer of children’s books who helped to foster our sense of space during our early days, should express a beautiful world of imaginations. Since its location is extended from the center of Paju Book City, it was all the more important to make a specific space than to create a singular objet. Neatly placed from the road to the stream are stepping stones, and to its end sits a rock-like steel box at the edge of the water. After carving out a pattern of constellation on the ground, ‘star pillars’ of various heights are erected. The space created by these columns—from which 61 small rays of light emanates—and the steel rock, together with starlights, their reflection on the water, and the sounds of crickets, compose the monument for Ma Hae-song. Every piece of the monument is built of Cor-ten, a material that gradually gathers rust which in turn becomes a preservative cladding. With time itself weathering along the rust, the world of imaginations as envision by Ma will be long remembered in our memory.
