Samyang Chemical

건축 테크놀로지의 역사에서 로마가 발명한 콘크리트는 혁명적 사건이었다. 자연으로부터 채취해서 가공한 부재로 건축재료로 써오던 수천 년의 전통을 바꾼 것이다. 이 이후 답보하던 건축기술은 고딕에 이르러 또 한번의 하이테크적 성취를 이룬다. 피어와 버트레스, 프라잉거더라는 창조적 구조를 만들어 지붕을 지지하게 함으로써 얼마든지 높은 건물을 지을 수 있게 되었고, 벽체는 지붕을 지지하던 부담에서 자유롭게 된 것이다. 어쩌면 르코르뷔제의 도미노이론은 이 고딕의 기술을 현대적 버전으로 다시 정리한 것이다. 자유롭게 된 벽체를 내외부를 가르는 막으로만 간주한 이 정리에 충실했던 오피스빌딩들은 그 이후 커튼 같은 유리로 된 외관을 갖는 게 전통이 되었다.

그러나 이 삼양화학 사옥은 다른 해법을 갖기로 했다. 즉 종래의 벽체에 전통적인 구조의 기능을 돌려주어 커튼월을 제거한다. 그렇게 하면, 벽체가 기둥역할을 한 내부공간에는 기둥이 사라져서 더욱 자유로운 평면이 될 뿐 아니라, 유리벽으로 부담해야 했던 에너지소비도 줄게 된다. 무엇보다도 오랫동안 잃어버렸던 텍토닉한 공간감을 되살리는 게 중요한 소득이었다.

북쪽에는 공원이 조성되도록 지구단위계획에 규정되어 있었다. 이 규정을 신뢰하여 공원의 연장선에서 북쪽으로 틔어진 오픈 스페이스를 내부에 둔다. 따라서 이 아트리움 같은 공유공간을 중심으로 코어와 복도가 형성되어 내부의 움직임이 서로에게 노출된다. 그러면 더욱 친밀한 도시공동체가 이 속에서 형성될 수 있을 것으로 믿었다. 인테리어라는 이름으로 타인이 설계를 간섭하는 바람에 공간의 힘이 다소 약화되었다. 그러나 견고한 콘크리트의 구조적 벽체가 공간을 구축하고 있는 한 그 힘은 늘 존재해 있으며, 그 힘이 건축이 가져야 할 진정성을 지탱하는 바탕이 될 것이다.

In the history of building technology, concrete, invented in Rome, was a revolutionary event. It changed the tradition of thousands of years of using building materials extracted and processed from nature. Afterwards, the standstill building technology achieves another high technological achievement in the Gothic era. Creative structures such as pier, buttress, and flying girder were made to support the roof, so you could build the building as high as you want, and the walls became free from the burden of supporting the roof. Maybe the domino theory of Le Corbusier was a rearrangement of this Gothic technology into a modern version. The office buildings that devoted the walls, which became free, to be the partitions dividing the inside from outside, created the tradition of having a glass exterior like curtains afterwards.

However, I decided to create a different solution for the Samyang Chemical Office Building. That is, by returning the function of the traditional structure of the wall, the curtain walls are removed. In addition, in the inner space where the walls play the role of the pillars, you have more free flat space with the pillars disappearing, and the energy consumption decreases, which was increased by the glass walls. Most of all, a major benefit was the recovery of the tectonic spatial feeling that was lost for a long time.
