Reed House

노헌은 웰콤의 박사장이 건축주이다. 그는 웰콤을 지을 때 이미 이 노헌 부지 옆에 있던 집을 구입하여 개조하여 사용하던 터 였다. 주변이 개발의 붐을 타고 집을 지을 조짐이 보이자 그 몰골들을 염려하여 옆 땅들을 구입하여 자작나무 숲을 조성하고 있었다. 그러다 노헌 부지까지 구입하게 되는데 이미 이 땅 위에는 검붉은 벽돌로 육중하게 지은 집 두 채가 나란히 있었으며 넓은 땅에는 양잔디가 곱게 가꾸어져 있었다. 우리는 새롭게 지어야 할 집에 대해 쉽게 일치하였다. 양잔디 대신 은빛 억새풀이 무성한 풍경일 것, 억새풀 너머는 울창한 자작나무 숲이며 집은 그 숲 속에 누일 것. 집 자체에 대한 생각보다는 이 땅의 풍광을 어떻게 만들 것인가에 대한 의견이 오랫동안 교환되었다. 200m 가까운 길이의 땅 위에 전개되는 억새풀과 자작나무 숲의 크기를 고려하여 폭 4.8m 길이 36m의 나무 통이 그려졌다. 홍수가 되면 때때로 평상지면 보다 2,3m 높이 위로 강물이 범람하는 것을 고려하여 주층은 2층으로 하고 아래는 되도록 작업실이나 창고 등을 두었다. 집 앞에 작은 문방을 하나 둔 까닭은 집과 문방사이에 생겨나는 적당한 긴장감에 대한 기대가 주 목적이지만 집에서 보는 바깥 풍경에 대한 고려도 크다. 침수 대비하여 골조는 아무래도 콘크리트로 만들지만 주층인 상부층의 외부는 목재로 치장하였다. 자작나무를 구하려 했으나 여러 사정상 일반 방부목을 쓰고 그 치장하는 방법을 일반적인 것과는 달리 목재널 사이에 각재를 돌출하게 하여 목재널의 방수성을 증대 시키면서 수평의 강한 그림자를 만들게 된다. 지붕은 철재로 보강된 나무로 골조를 만들고 티타늄으로 덮으면 강 건너에서 보게 되면 자작나무 사이에 햇빛에 반짝거리는 경사지붕을 가진 길다란 집이 떠 있는 모습이 된다.

The client of this house is same one with Welcomm City. He had purchased and remodeled an existing house in riverside area near Seoul when the Welcomm City were under construction. As the area in the boom of development was expected to be recklessly filled with buildings, he was worried about the horrible scene they would produce and finally purchased the land parcels around his house. And a new house was asked. The client agreed to plant 10 thousand birch trees on the site as well as numerous reeds along the river. So this new house located in the middle of birch forest should be named Reed House. Taking into account the 200-meter long road, and both sides of which to be lined with wild silver reed and birch trees, a concept came up: a wooden box 4.8 meters wide and 36 meters long. In more detail, considering the fact that the river would flood over two meters above the normal ground surface in times of flood, the main floor of the house was to be the second floor, and a work room, a warehouse, and others were assigned to the first floor. The main reason for a small annex cottage in front of the house was promote adequate tension between the house and the cottage, but such a placement of the small house was expected to make the view from inside the house look far better. The frame was made of concrete, in preparation against deluge, but the exterior of the upper story, or the main floor, was finished with wooden materials. Unlike cases in general, protruding timber beams were placed here and there among the planks to increasing the waterproof function of the timber planks, and, at the same time, to have strong parallel shadow cast beautifully. The frame of the roof was made of timber, reinforced with steel, and covered with titanium. As the result, when viewed from across the river, a long shaped house among the birch trees, with an inclining roof shining in the sun, would look like a floating house.
