Sunuldang

대지는 온양 부근 신정호수가 바로 내려다 보이는 구릉에 위치하고 있다. 호수 너머에 얕으막한 산들이 전개되다가 멀리 광덕산 줄기가 솟아 전체 조망의 크기가 적절히 광활하다. 그 산들의 실루엣들이 만드는 풍경이 여간 아름답지 않고 이 구릉의 대지는 마치 이를 위한 관망대 같다. 지역정책연구소도 같이 짓게 된 주택이라 그 규모가 다소 크다. 부근에는 농가 몇 채가 있을 뿐이어서 구릉 위에 서게 되는 집의 외견상으로 나타날 볼륨에 신경이 쓰였다. 사회과학자인 건축주가 교직에 몸담고 있어 괜한 구설에 오르는 일 때문에도 그러했지만 아름다운 풍경을 건축이 지배하는 것이 우선적으로 내키지 않았다. 집이 조경의 일부로 보이는 일이 필요하였다. 그래서 입구부터 구릉 위에까지 경사진 땅을 축대로 구획하고 이 축대가 집까지 연장되어 집은 축대 속에 있게 하였다. 축대 위에 있는 집은 주인의 침소 뿐이어서 목재로 마감되어 결국 이 땅에서 보이는 유일한 건축이다. 큰 축대인 집과 연구실의 위는 당연히 풀과 꽃이 깔린 마당이며 장독대도 있는 새로운 땅이다. 이 새로운 땅이 만드는 수평선이 구릉 위에 떠서 주변의 고만고만한 풍경에 척도자로 그 역할을 담당한다. 결국 조경을 한 셈이다. 옥호를 지어달라는 주인의 부탁에 노자 도덕경에 나오는 ‘대변약눌(大辯若訥-크게 잘 말하는 것이 어눌함보다 못하다)’에서 따서 ‘수눌당(守訥堂)’이라고 제안했다. 말함으로 가르치는 교수의 직업인에게는 의미 있는 말이겠지만, 이 건축에서 되도록 보이지 않으려고 한 생각 때문에 어렵지 않게 떠 올린 단어였다.

The land is located on a hill that oversees Sinjeong Lake near Onyang, Chungcheong Province. The overall view is appropriately spacious with low mountains spreading out across the Lake and a range of Gwangduk Mountain towering in a far distance. The silhouette that the mountains make is remarkably spectacular, whereas the land on this hill looks like an observatory. The size of the land is somewhat large as it will also house the Regional Policy Research Institute. There are only a few farms around the landsite, which bothered me as the exterior of the building that will be set up on the hill may eclipse the beauty of the natural scenery itself. My annoyance had something to do with my capacity as a social scientist-cum-architect. But it was more because of my reluctance that I do not want architecture to hold sway over the eye-catching scenery. The only way to overcome this dilemma was to make the building to become a part of a landscape. I constructed an embankment on a tilted land from the entrance to the hill, and had the house belong to the embankment. After completion, only visible would be the main bedroom, which will stand on the hill, with a finishing touch of wood. Above the house of the large embankment and Regional Policy Research Institute are a courtyard with abundant grasses and diverse flowers, and a new land serving as a terrace for Korean traditional soy sauce crocks. This new land constitutes a horizon, which, floating above the hill, acts as a landmark for the surrounding not-so-significant scenery. When asked to name the house from the owner, I suggested ‘Sunuldang’, which means it is better to be stammering than to be fluent, quoted from a famous remark of a prominent Chinese scholar. The word easily hit upon me, as I had sought to keep low profile in revealing architectural concept and put more emphasis on the natural scenery throughout the whole construction process.
