Korean Medicine Hospital of Daejeon University

우리 사무실은 사실 병원설계의 경험이 상당히 많다. 주로 산부인과 위주의 중소병원이긴 하지만 한국의 병원환경에 적지 않게 영향을 주었다고 여긴다. 특히 90년대 초, 강남의 영동제일병원(현 미즈메디병원)은 한국의 병원건축을 종래의 창백한 백색에서 탈피하게 만드는 계기가 되었다고 하며 실제 그 성과로 인해 많은 병원설계를 의뢰 받게 되었다. 그러나 정작 우리가 그 병원에서 성취한 것은 소위 인테리어의 고급화가 아니었다. 나는 그 병원을 설계하기 위해, 병원에 대한 새로운 정의, 산부인과의 속성, 현대의학의 변화추이를 살피며 해외의 선진병원을 답사하였고, 클라이언트와 많은 숙의를 거쳐 새롭게 진료시스템을 바꾸는 데 성공한 것이다. 그 새로운 시스템은 철저히 환자위주의 동선구성과 산부인과의 특성상 환자의 프라이버시를 완벽히 보장하는 공간구성이었다. 그로 인한 결과가 종래의 병원과는 다른 형식을 갖게 했으며 이 형식이 고급스레 보이는 내부 분위기를 만든 것이다. 즉, 적어도 본질에 대한 집착이 새로운 형식을 만든다는 것을 다시 확인하게 된다. 고백하지만, 그 후에 설계한 꽤 많은 병원은 이 성과를 반복한 것이라고 말할 수도 있다. 물론 부분적으로 더 정교한 프로그램을 만들기도 하였고, 건축적 어휘가 더 풍부하게 되어 더욱 진보한 내외부 경관을 만들기도 했지만, 본질적 차원은 이미 한계를 가지고 있었다. 실제로 그렇게 반복하도록 건축주가 요구했다 하드라도, 그런 한계는 건축가에게는 위험한 타성임에 틀림이 없다. 그러다가 한 한방병원을 설계하여 지었는데, 이 결과가 나를 몹시 반성하게 하였다. 완성된 병원을 갔을 때, 몸이 불편한 노년의 환자가 화장실에 가기 위해 어렵게 이동하는 것을 보고, 그저 근사한 병원풍경 만들기에 주력한 나의 타성을 목도하고 만 것이다. 한방병원은 근본적으로 양방병원과 달라야 했다. 한방병원의 원래 형태는 어릴 적 우리가 보던 한의원이었다. 한의사가 마루에 앉아 환자를 진맥하며 원기를 북돋게 하여 요양하게 하는 그런 느릿한 풍경, 그런 한방시설이 대규모로 변하면서 원론적 고찰 없이 일반병원-긴급하며 최단동선을 유지하고 하루에 수십 명의 환자를 기계적으로 대하는, 항상 긴장감에 짓눌려 있는 그런 양방병원의 유형을 답습한 게 요즘의 한방병원이며 우리의 작업도 예외가 아니었다. 양방부분도 있지만 한방의 진료 및 치유가 주된 목적인 천안병원은 그래서 새로운 유형의 병원이어야 했다. 가장 이슈가 되는 것은 병원 내에 장기 입원하는 노년의 환자나 거동이 불편한 환자들이다. 이들은 그야말로 동병상린의 심정을 서로에 대해 갖고 있으며 오랜 기간을 입원해야 하는 만큼 입원병동은 한시적이지만 이들 삶의 공동체이다. 병렬로 나열된 선형의 입원실이 아니라, 공간을 공유하는 공동주거여야 했으며, 이 공동주거형식에는 공동체정신을 고양할 마당과 걷고 산책할 수 있는 길, 쉴 수 있는 녹지가 있어야 하며, 석양을 보는 즐거움도 있어야 했다. 이 병원은 천안시의 외곽에 위치하지만 투기열풍에 휩싸인 도시 팽창속도가 이내 이 부근을 개발지역 속에 묶어 놀라운 변화 속의 풍경으로 들어와 있다. 건너편의 절단된 산이 그나마 녹지의 언덕을 유지하고 있어 밀려오는 상업주의 건물들 적절히 방어하고 있으나, 인접해 오는 각종 러브호텔과 술집들의 현란한 광고판과 추잡한 형태의 풍경이 이 병원을 위협한다. 또한 질주하는 차량의 위세 또한 만만한 게 아니어서 안정된 내부 분위기를 견지하기 위해서는 공간의 켜를 몇 겹으로 세워 진을 펼칠 필요가 있었다. 따라서 사이 공간은 공공영역으로 설정되며 반 외부공간의 형식을 갖는다. 건너편 산의 녹지는 테라스로 건너와 병원 거주자들의 좋은 공원이 되어 이로써 병원의 녹지가 무한확장 될 가능성이 농후하다. 여기서도 사용한 현무암은 특히 한방병원이 상징하는 동양적 질감 및 색감을 고려할 때 자연스러웠다. 불규칙한 창문 배열과 현무암 간격의 선이 만드는 리듬은 간선도로의 속도감과 관련한 것이다. 물론 요즘 편하게 사용하고 있는 형식이기도 하지만 여기의 주변 정황을 고려하면 더욱 적합하다. 여기에 놓여진 가구도 죄다 설계하였고 싸인시스템도 우리의 의사가 강하게 반영되어 나타났을 만큼, 건축주인 대전대학교의 우리에 대한 신뢰는 특별하였다. 그래서 무한책임을 느끼지만, 어디선가 또 모자란 생각의 결과가 나타날 것 같아 불안한 것도 사실이다.

Our office has had much experience in hospital design. We have mostly designed small and medium size hospitals mainly with obstetrics and gynecology. We think we have affected quite a lot to hospital environment. Especially, in the early of 90s, Yeongdong Cheil Hospital in Gangnam(Present Mizmedi Hospital) was a start to break the pale white color of hospital in Korea. After that, many offers to design hospital are received. However, the things we have achieved at the hospital were not gentrified interior. To design a hospital, I reviewed the trend of present medical industry, gynecology feature, new concepts and definitions and visited overseas advanced hospital. Through many considerations and discussions with our clients, I could make it to change medical system. The new system was the patient-oriented moving line and privacy-protecting space design. This atmosphere made the new hospital look gentrified than previous ones. In other words, adhesion to essence made new type, which was confirmed again. Frankly speaking, quite a lot hospitals designed later repeated this result. Of course, partially, more delicate programs were created. More advanced internal and external view was created with richer vocabularies. However, essential level had already limitation. Even though building owner asked so, such limitation was definitely risky differences to architect. Then, I designed and constructed one oriental medicine hospital. The result made me reflect myself seriously. When I went to completed hospital, senior patient who has difficulty to move tried hard to go to rest room. The moment was the time that I found myself that I have only tried to create decent hospital scene. Oriental medicine hospital had to be different from western medicine hospital from fundamentals. The original type of oriental medicine hospital was Oriental Medical Clinic that we have seen since young. Slow scenery that oriental doctor seated himself on the floor and felt the pulse of patients to provoke vigor and recuperate them. Such oriental medical facilities become big. And without principal considerations, it has copied western medicine hospital with shortest moving line and mechanical response to urgencies and suspense. That was also what we have done. Cheonan Hospital mainly with oriental medical treatment and recuperation in addition to some western medical treatment shall be new concept of hospital. The most issue is the senior patients who move hard and stay in hospital for long time. They have sympathy to each other. Since they need to stay long at hospital, hospital is their temporary community. It shall be collective space shared rather than side-arranged rooms. There shall be pleasure to provoke community mind, walk paths, rest in greens, and watch sunset. This hospital is located in outskirts of Cheonan. City expansion speed by speculation made this area tied to development area to create amazing scenery. Cut mountains across were the only greens to prevent the flood of commercial buildings. Different love hotels and bars’ splendid signboards and dirty scenes threat this hospital. In addition, running cars threat the peaceful inside atmosphere of hospital. Space needs to be layered. Therefore, interval space becomes public space and half-external space. Greens across mountains become good parks for residents linked to terrace. Hospital greenery can be extended without limit. Basalt used here shall be natural, considering oriental texture and color which symbolize Oriental Medicine Hospital. Irregular window arrangements and rhythm that lines of basalt intervals create are related to speed of principal road. Of course, they are the commonly-used form and also proper considering environments. We have designed all furniture here as well. Even sign system reflects our opinions and ideas strongly. That much, construction owner, trust of Daejeon University for us was special. So, we felt limitless responsibility. But we also felt anxious if we would find some parts that were unsatisfactory.
